Parathyroid disease
Primary hyperparathyroidism
-
Generally, a single adenoma is responsible for about 85-90% of 1°HPT. About 10-15% of patients have multigland parathyroid disease, with about 10% having hyperplasia (where all the glands are mildly enlarged and overactive) and about 5% of patients having double adenomas (2 discrete glands are pathologically enlarged).
Parathyroid cancer is very rare, with an incidence of about 1 in 1-2 million cases.
